Since 1865, the University of Iowa College of Law has been a leader in legal education, proudly holding the distinction of being the oldest law school west of the Mississippi River. The College of Law offers a Juris Doctor (JD) program grounded in legal doctrine and practice that is well known for its emphasis on legal writing, research, and analysis. The curriculum is designed to cultivate critical thinking, ethical practice, and a deep understanding of the law’s role in society. Students can explore a variety of career paths through elective courses and gain leadership experience through active student organizations, including four student-run journals and an award-winning appellate advocacy program. In addition to the traditional three-year JD program, Iowa Law offers a Master of Laws (LLM) program and a Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) program.
